Default Multi-Server Requirements

Hi,

There are a lot of multi-server installation tickets. None of them can actually be installed. Here is a brief description of the multi-server plugin:

Quote:
I. How the multi-server module works:
This is a real example (implemented more then 9 times until now and working perfectly):
- main server - www.main-server.com
- second server (streaming/video conversion) streaming1.main-server.com

The main server will host the clipshare script. When users upload videos they will be redirected to the second server (this is why
mysql access on the main server from the second server is required), sessions is being shared between the 2 servers and the
users dont need to login again. Users upload videos, the server (users are already on the second server), converts the video to
FLV, extracts thumbs, sends the thumbs back the the main server (via FTP, this is why FTP access to the main server
is required) and updates the database (second reason for mysql access on the main server from the second server) configuring
the server from where clipshare will stream the video.

II. REQUIREMENTS.
1. At least two servers (there is no point to install the multi-server module on one server, this will only
cause overhead for your server and the clipshare script).
2. All servers (there can be more then 2 servers) must have ssh root access.
3. All streaming servers (there is one main server and there can be more then one streaming/conversion servers) must
be a subdomain of the main server, eg: main-server.com, streaming1.main-server.com, streaming2.main-server.com...and
so on (this is required by PHP for sharing the session between the 2 servers).
4. All streaming servers must be able to access the mysql database on the main servers (for sharing the session between the servers).
5. All streaming servers must be able to access the main server via FTP (required for uploading the thumbs).

III. ADVANTAGES:
1. This is what every big video sharing site does. The bandwidth for a big site is simply not enough for streaming all the videos,
thats why spliting the videos on more then 1 server is better.
2. The video conversion uses a lot of CPU and RAM. Using additional servers for the video conversion improves the site's
speed.
3. Starting from the Multi-Server module more complex configurations can be done, like mysql on a separate server, thumbs
on another servers.

IV. DISADVANTAGES:
The only disadvantage is that the requirements must be met, causing the installation to be not so easy.
If the above requirements are not met, i cant install the multi-server plugin
and this will lead to a lot of problems, for all multi-servers tickets that
are not installed the requirements are the problem!

Hi,

Here is what happens if you dont read the requirements:
Quote:
I read the requirements jackass

I have told you TWO OR THREE TIMES that my host does not like to give ssh ROOT access because they don't feel it is necessary.

But instead of giving me a specific reply, you just keep replying with "did you read the requirements?"
I'm sick of being called a jackass, a stupid helpdesk employee, stupid...

symtab, this is a prime example of what needs to be posted at http://www.notalwaysright.com

Some people are just too stupid... Best way to remedy this would be to remove all warning label on products, and let the idiots kill themselves out.

it is getting to the point where alot of poeple are commin on here and going over and over the same issues of server config problems

maybe a simple how to guide on installing a auto install script such as the open source auto ffmpeg installer is needed

maybe all these popele can then be redirected over to the sherrin.in forums for support instead of getting upset over here

Hi,

True. Why write documentation for the modules installation process, if google
gives you more then 10.000 pages with information about the modules? The documentation would have to work on all type of servers (and believe me you cant cover everything, because there are always hosting companies that modify the default configuration).

the guy over at sherrin.in is doing some good work on all the mods needed to get a video site set up and server mods installed

i found many install tuts in google and followed them threw always to run into minor problems here or there

after trying the laestest autoffmpeg installer , on centos5 , plesk, it ran threw with only a few minor hitches, but once mentioned the poeple over there said there going to add more checks etc for server setting to take account of needed server requiremnets etc

just a point tho , if you have not tryed that script to install the server mods lately, try it out when you do a next setup, its cool, runs threw as a bash script installing everything needed and takes only about 20 minutes to complete

where as you will be there for hours doing a manuel install and maybe run into other problems , config setting escpialy with ffmpeg php

not usefull for everyone, but worth a try

probably be a good idea to post up a how to guide to run threw the steps needed for specfic os's, maybe others whould add theres to for other os's, then atleast poeple have some means to look over examples and maybe saving lots of effort time and head straching

i just posted a 'how to set a server up' thread in the how to section

just for refance and only for a centos5 plesk server - probably not much differance for other server setups to

This is something I also experience with many of my scripts or softwares.
People can be weird, rude and anything else...

I'm still doing same only because luckilly most of people are really nice and friendly. Some are pretty smart, learning things fast and then it's a pleasure with both: talking and working.
